To get the best out of a vertical milling machine the spindle needs to be set square to the table in both the X and Y directions; this process is called trammelling or just 'tram' for short. The Y direction should be set square when the machine is assembled in the factory so should need no attention. In the X direction most machines are fitted with a facility that allows the head to be tilted to allow machining or drilling at an angle. To reset the head back square you will need to carry out the trammelling procedure.
