Indian refractory industry: challenges for growth

Refractories are products used for high temperature insulation and erosion/ corrosion and are made mainly from non-metallic minerals according to the Indian Refractory Makers Association (IRMA). Traditionally, refractories are made of naturally occuring minerals, e.g. bauxite, kyanite, magnesite, fireclay, chrome ore etc. Lately, however, the industry has been using man-made raw materials, e.g. tabular alumina, fused magnesia, silicon carbide etc. According to IRMA, modern refractory production is the process of forming naturally occuring (or synthetic) non-metallic mineral oxides (and some non-oxides like carbides or nitrides) under the bonding conditions of high heat and pressure.
