Rusal has launched the most powerful electrolysis cell produced in Russia at its smelter and tests are afoot to introduce an even stronger one later in 2006. According to the company, the newly launched RA-400 cell, which runs at 400 kA, will "guarantee better environmental, technical and economic results with electrical current efficiency expected to exceed 94 percent" at the Sayanogorsk Aluminium Smelter. Rusal had invested a total of 11,3-million US dollars in the project. It says production efficiency at the smelter will be boosted by 30 percent and emissions reduced by 30 percent compared to the 300 kA cell launched in 2003. The RA-400 is designed to produce 3 t/d of aluminium at less than 13 800 kW/h consumed per tonne produced.
