Arabica futures in New York ended with further losses as a tumbling currency in top grower Brazil pressured arabica values in the period under review with a short covering bounce only able to make up some of the losses. The Brazilian real extended losses to a 12-year low of 3.4475 against the US dollar on fears that the country is poised to lose its investment-grade rating. The benchmark contract for September delivery ended 4.50 cents lower at 125.25 cents/lb, after hitting a 1-1/2-year low of 119.85 cents last week. Second-month December finished 4.65 cents weaker at 128.50 cents/lb.Speculators increased their bearish bets on arabica coffee contracts on ICE Futures US to the highest level since December 2013 in the week ended July 28, US Commodity Futures Trading Commission data show. The dealers boosted their arabica coffee net short for the second straight week, adding 5,479 contracts for a bearish bet of 29,014 contracts, the highest level since December 2013.
