World arabica coffee prices have recorded losses between January 7 and January 21, giving up nearly 8% as forecasts substantial rains over Brazil's coffee-growing regions let the bulls stay on the sidelines. The benchmark March contract on ICE FuturesUS gave up 13.80 cents, or 7.9%, to end at 161.25 cents/lb, while the contract for delivery in May 2015 also finished 13.80 cents down at 163.95 cents/lb.Robusta futures on ICE Futures Europe also recorded losses in the period under review, with the benchmark March contract shedding $33 to a settlement of $1,947 per tonne on January 21. The May contract finished $27 down at $ 1,976 a tonne.The premium of arabicas over robustas dropped over 14% in the period under review to 72.94 cents/lb, the lowest since mid-July 2014.The ICO composite indicator price dropped to 143.83 cents/lb on January 21 from 151.28 cents/lb on January 7. The average price of Colombian Milds settled at 178.79 cents/lb, down 10.88 cents. Meanwhile, Other Milds closed 11.43 cents lower at 183.37 cents/lb and Brazilian Naturals posted an 11.25 cent loss to 156.67 cents/lb. Robustas moved a mere 0.67 cent down to 97.68 cents/lb.Speculators in arabica coffee futures and options raised their net long position for the second week in a row in the week ended January 13, bringing it to 24,117 lots, up 8,829 on the week. Meanwhile, noncommercial investors increased their net long position in robusta coffee futures and options on ICE FuturesEurope in the week ended January 13 by 3,392 lots to 14,315.
