Global coffee prices have recorded gains in the period under review, although the performance of New York arabica futures and London robustas has not been homogeneous. Arabica futures edged about 1.4% higher, while robustas gained over 7% between January 6 and 18. Outside factors continued to have a strong influence on global coffee prices amid little fresh fundamental news. The benchmark March arabica contract ended at 224.85 cents/lb on January 18, up 3.10 cents. In a rally sparked by short-covering on January 11, the contract gained 4% in one session to settle at a five-week high of 234.90 cents/lb. Weak macro sentiment put an abrupt end to the rally though and the market pared all gains in the following two sessions. London robusta prices endedhigher in most sessions in the period under review, with the benchmark March contract eventually closing $129 higher at $1,849 per tonne.
