Breastfeeding has a major role to play in promoting public health and reducing health inequalities with clear short and long term health benefits for both the mother and her infant (Breastfeeding Manifesto Coalition 2006). Therefore it is crucial that breastfeeding is promoted, protected and supported (WHO & UNICEF 2003). Breast milk provides complete nutrition for the health and development of infants, reducing the risks ofmany infections that are potentially threatening to then-well-being, for example, gastro-intestinal and respiratory (Quigley et al 2007), ear (Fewtrell 2004) and urinary infections (Marild et al 1990). A baby from an atopic family is less likely to suffer from allergic conditions such as wheeze, eczema (Fewtrell 2004) and diabetes (Sadauskaite-Kuehne et al 2004) if it is breastfed. In contrast, babies that are not breastfed are more inclined to become obese in later life and have a greater risk of illness (Howie et al 1990, Wilson et al 1998, Fewtrell 2004). There is evidence that breastfeeding also has long term benefits (Horta et al 2007), impacting positively upon blood pressure, total cholesterol, diabetes and cognitive development.
