Metal Coal is a huge mine, even by world standards, the scale of operations tending to render the first-time visitor speechless. To illustrate, Matla, on its own, contributes 0.34 percent of total world hard-coal production."We have split the operation into manageable sections," says Jock Nel, general manager of Matla Coal, "running it as four discrete mines although more recently a separate boxcut was opened to access the No 5 Seam."
