The relentless retreat in world coffee prices that started after the New York arabica market hit a 14-year high at $3.0890 per lb in May 2011 eventually came to a halt in June when the front-month contract reached a bottom at $1.4820 per lb, not far above where industry sources estimate the cost of production in the world's top jproducer Brazil. Since then the market has been trading between $1.60 and $1.90 per lb and settled near $1.80 when this article went to press.
