摘要

The 1918 influenza epidemic spread rapidly and widely, overwhelming a civilian medical establishment whose numbers had been depleted by war time service. In a period of just 5 months, about 675,000 died of influenza-related complications. By contrast, the other great twentieth century epidemic, HIV/AIDS, according to the most recent Centers for Disease Control estimates (2007), has sickened 1,018,428 and killed nearly 583,300 Americans since the first cases were reported nearly 20 years ago.
