South African PGM producers buoyed by higher prices

HIGHER metal prices offset rising costs and negligible production growth to drive Johannesburg-listed Anglo American Platinum Corp Ltd to a 64 percent increase in profit for the year to December 31,2005. Headline earnings (which strip out non-operating and one-off items) totalled R4.23 billion for the year, up from R2.58 billion in 2004, as a 16 percent increase in the average received 'basket price' of the suite of metals produced, to R8,871/oz of platinum sold, boosted sales revenue by 19 percent, to R22.94 billion. The average received platinum price rose by 6 percent, to R5,704/oz.
