North Yorkshire 1 Mt limestone extension

An application for extension of mineral working at Kirk Smeaton Limeworks, Kirk Smeaton for T & T Aggregates Ltd was approved by North Yorkshire CC in June. Kirk Smeaton Limeworks is a long established site, first permitted in 1948. The site was subsequently dormant for many years. In 1992 the old planning permission was registered as valid and a new scheme of conditions was approved in 1993. Mineral extraction subsequently recommenced and the site has been worked continually since then. It has reserves for three years remaining and permission was sought for an extension onto 1.3 ha of adjoining agricultural land. This would yield about 1Mt of magnesian limestone for agricultural lime and aggregate, over eight years. Processing would be via existing mobile plant.
