Peruvians bring litigation against mine to the US courts

As the planet shrinks through globalisation, NGOs and attorneys are able to bring the magic of western-style litigation to the third world. Those labelled indigenous peoples increasingly know their existing rights and demand new ones when it comes to compensation for death, injury or property damage caused by negligence or accident on the part of private-sector project owners and their affiliates. Today, litigators on behalf of those affected by incidents at remotely sited projects are trying to bring the issues back to a sponsor's home country for a full bearing in western court. The trend toward larger payouts to victims for incidents in the developing world, as well as the attendant publicity back home, has caught the attention of sponsors, lenders and insurers.
