Sen. Dale Bumpers (D-AR) introduced legislation aimed at stopping the development of Crown Butte Mining's New World gold mine several miles north of Yellowstone National Park. For years, Bumpers has led the way in trying to change the Mining Law of 1872 to impose a royalty on hard rock mining in the United States and the process of patenting mining claims. So far, his attempts have been rejected. Now the senator has introduced S-1737, the Yellowstone Protection Act of 1996. And he is making no bones about its intention. "We want to dissuade and discourage Crown Butte from going through with this," he said. A similar measure was introduced in the House in June 1995 by Rep. Bill Richardson (D-NM).
