The SME Foundation can assist the GEM program

Implicit in the designation GEM is the mandate to pro-mote the best interests of the mining engineer in three arenas of operation: government, education and mining. Up to now, GEM initiatives have been directed toward educational activities, particularly participation in the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) meetings. There, pamphlets and mineral specimens are distributed and eagerly accepted by the teachers. GEM operates one of the most effective distribution nets for the Minerals Information Institute's publications. This GEM program has met with enormous success. Through it, GEM has taken on a life of its own within the society.
