LUDWIG KARL RATSCHILLER

Ludwig Karl Ratschiller, a man with many friends and excellent geologist, died March 27,2004, after a courageous struggle with cancer. He was born in 1921 in Brixen, Italy, the son of a Tyrolese father and a Polish mother. As a native Tyrolean, Ratschiller came into contact with the spectacular outcrops of Alpine rock formations. He was inspired to study geology and began his studies in Austria in January 1941. After World War II, he earned his Ph.D. from the University of Innsbruck, Austria. He also earned a doctorate in geology from University of Bologna, Italy. There, he started his professional career as an assistant professor at the university's mineralogical-petrographical institute.
