Armoured Pig

The Humber Pig fits perfectly into the category of vehicles conceived as 'stop gap' measures, the 'ugly ducklings', yet it is these which sometimes inspire us the most and trigger the imagination with their unusual characters and quirky appearances. At the end of the 1940s the British Army found itself with no purpose-built Armoured Personnel Carriers and a deteriorating security situation in Malaya for which the planned vehicle, the Alvis Saracen APC was still some way off entering service. At the time the British Army was using the FV1601 Humber 1 Ton truck in a number of different roles including 'GS' troop carriers and cargo trucks and the decision was made to modify a quantity of these vehicles by removing their standard cabs and bodies and replacing these with armoured bodies to create an armoured personnel carrier, and thus the Pig was born. The name Pig apparently comes from the long snout shaped bonnet, however it's also said that they were a bit of a 'pig' to drive too!
