Military in Scale : SPITFIX

The success of the inaugural Spitfix at the RAF Museum Hendon on December 19th 2009 took everyone by surprise. What started as little more than an embellished Christmas book signing (the Boys' Book of Airfix had been published a couple of months before), evolved into a full-on modelmaking event and was eventually awarded a Guinness World Record, the attendance being so large. What struck all of us at Collecting Friends however, was the enormous bonhomie prevalent amongst the crowds of visitors. I had assumed 'air minded' dads would enjoy making model Spitfires in a communal atmosphere but I had no idea mums and big sisters would get such a kick from making plastic kits. The triumph of the trailblasing Spitfix encouraged us to organise another and because we had added more features like illustrated lectures, an opportunity to meet some celebrities from the world of scale models and trade stands and exhibitions, our second Spitfix was destined to be the pattern for future events (we plan a series of regular Spitfix gatherings throughout 2011).
