It may seemredundant to have to state that our patients should always be at the heart of what we do and that our collective aim should be delivering optimum and safe care to all. Cocooned by the assumption and belief that we are all singing from the same hymn sheet we carry on without necessarily taking time out to reflect on what we do and how we do it. Yet every so often events occur which burst our collective protective bubble and rock the foundations of the very systems we work and believe in. No one who works in the National Health Service (NHS) in the United Kingdom (UK) can have failed to be shocked and appalled by the events which occurred in Mid Staffordshire which led to the publication of the findings of the Francis report earlier this year (NHS Confederation, 2013).
