Any one contemplating disposing of their mineral collection might be interested in hearing about my recent entertaining and rewarding foray into the world of mineral dealing. Like most of us, I enjoy looking at the pictures of world class specimen in your publication, but don't have the resources to ever own such beauties- mine is the world of mostly the 50 to 100 dollar specimen, warts, dings, and all. So, when the time came to dispose of my collection, I thought I would just donate the specimens to our state museum, and take the established value of the collection as a tax write-off. Not so fast- the operative words are "established value". I could have gone the appraisal route, but that is expensive.
