The Bristol Silver Mining District

The Bristol Silver Mining District lies approximately 14 miles NW of Pioche in Lincoln County, Nevada. Initial discovery of ore was made in the late 1860's following the discovery of the rich silver-lead ores at Pioche during the winter of 1863/64. A camp was established in the early 1870's, originally called National City, after the National Mine. The name was changed to Bristol City in 1878. The Bristol Silver Mining Company (BSMC) took over the property from the Bristol Copper Mining Company and others around 1925 and operated almost continuously until May 21,1971, when all mine operations ceased. Under BSMC the various mines and properties of the district were consolidated. Mines such as National, May Day, Bristol, Hillside, Gypsy, Tempest, Vesuvius, Ida May and Black Metal (Jackrabbit) became part of the Bristol operation. In the 1870's a smelter was built 5 miles NW of Bristol at Bristol Well to process the mine's ore.
