First developed in the 1980s, cylinder deactivation was trialled in larger engines only for it to stall over numerous engineering problems. But as technology advances and fuel efficiency gains greater impetus, the idea is making a comeback. Originally cylinder deactivation technology was developed to reduce fuel consumption on large capacity multi-cylinder petrol engines. Large capacity engines have been renowned for poor fuel consumption that is not helped by an inefficiency known as pumping loss. The term pumping loss is used to describe an engine that is unable to draw in a sufficient quantity of air and fuel mixture on the inlet stroke to produce a high cylinder pressure on the compression stroke.
