The decision in January by Jaguar Land Rover to dump 300 managers as well as 150 other staff has an uncomfortable feel. Was the company really being run like the Civil Service or a local authority - too many people in non-jobs - and has the recession done the business a favour? Is the policy now to keep as many skilled line workers as possible against the day when production is up and running again, promoting from the floor when section leadership needs replenishment?
