Geoscience mapping in the economic development of New South Wales

Geological mapping has been an important element of the activities of the Geological Survey of New South Wales since its establishment in 1875 (see separate article this issue). The Geological Survey's investigations into the mineral resources and geology of the State have provided strong support and an effective framework for coal, mineral and petroleum exploration and development.In recent decades there have been two major programs of geological mapping in the State. The first was a major program undertaken during the 1960s and early 1970s when most of the State was covered by 1 is to 250 000 scale geological mapping. The second, which is currently in progress, is directed towards providing a quality coverage more appropriate for modern exploration. It makes extensive use of airborne geophysical survey information, satellite imagery and quality base maps both of these programs have influenced very significantly the amount and locations of exploration activity in the State.
