Just before the global economy took a nosedive in 2008, both the mineral exploration and mining industry and government took a hard look at pending employee needs and got nervous. The projected labour deficit could choke future growth. In response, the BC HR Task Force: Mineral Exploration, Mining, Stone, Sand & Gravel (BC Task Force) was established to create a strategy to attract and retain labour to the mining industry in B.C., says David Bazowski, the task force's chair. Then the market crashed and unemployment and layoffs dominated the news.
