In the paper the selected wireless communications technologies were characterized and their functionality was reviewed, with a view to their use in mining communications and telemetric systems. It was concluded that recent progress in the field of wireless technology makes it feasible to implement distributed infrastructure systems in underground mine workings. Wireless local area networks and intelligent mesh topology networks were indicated as a basic technology for the development of such systems. The paper discusses a few solutions, already implemented in mining, as well as shortly presents the research carried out in this field by the EMAG Centre.
