In this work we measured the temperature distribution in the closed top vertical anode baking furnace in Talum, Kidricevo. It was found out that the uneven temperature distribution prevailed in the anode baking furnace, which in turn considerably increased the variation of anode properties and lead to different problems, such as frequent horizontal cracking and large net anode consumption. The results confirmed the correlation (1) between the maximum heating rate from 200 deg C and 600 deg C and the probability of anode horizontal cracking in an electrolysis cell, and (2) between the final baking temperature and the air-reactivity. The direct temperature measurement in the anode baking furnace provides several useful information and correlation to be essential in improving the anode baking furnace control system and optimising the flue gas flow system.
