JUST NINE MONTHS into the Highlands Pacific Ltd managing director's role, John Gooding is confident of turning around the past poor performance of the company as it progresses towards development at the Ramu nickel-cobalt and Frieda River copper-gold projects in Papua New Guinea. A lot of the risk has been taken out of both properties with its Chinese joint venture partner China Metallurgical Construction Group (MCC) currently gearing Ramu up for production start-up next year, while Frieda River JV partner Xstrata Copper is significantly stepping up its rate of expenditure to 25 million US dollars this year (from 10 million US dollars last year).
