Leading Australian-based research group CSIRO has championed the use of hyperspectral mineral mapping in the targeting of mineralisation indicators. A multi-scale tool which is commonly carried out remotely from the surface being studied, mineral mapping refers to the mapping of host rock, regolith and alteration mineralogy using the principles of reflectance and/or emission spectroscopy. It can span scales from the regional (with satellites) to district studies using airborne sensors. In addition, the methodology is applicable in work involving field sites, mine faces and-more recently - sub surface drill cores and chips.
