Ever since Nordic HID lights first became available in Australia several years ago, PJL Diesel Electric has been assisting mining and heavy industry to use the new Xenon gas technology to improve safety and efficiency. PJL Diesel Electric is one of the largest suppliers of auto electrical products to the mining industry and stocks all three major brands of HID lighting - Nordic, Hella and Speaker. They can be combined to create lighting solutions to suit a "wide range of situations and budgets. Nordic N400 Compact HID lamps are the newest addition to the range. Designed to directly replace halogen work lights and headlights, they allow the use of Xenon lighting on equipment with limited mount space. So what is HID? High intensity discharge (also known as gas discharge technology) offers many advantages over halogen lighting such as a longer life, reduced heat and a colour temperature that is closer to natural daylight. The light is produced by an arc in a small gas filled quartz tube. With no filament to break, the average life of this discharge tube is 5,000 hours (depending on switching). This is about 10 times the life of a standard halogen bulb. This will decrease machine down time and service time replacing bulbs.
