The link between salt sensitivity determined by polymorphisms in G protein-coupled receptor kinase 4 (GRK4) gene, and myocardial infarction

Aim. Objective of the study was to examine the link between myocardial infraction and salt sensitive hypertension determined by GRK4 gene polymorphisms (R65L, A142V and A486V) among Jordanian population. Methods. A case control study consisting of 50 hypertensive individuals with myocardial infraction and 50 hypertensive controls matched for age, gender and geographic area have been screened for the presence of the three GRK4 variants by using by allele specific PCR and the obtained results were confirmed by PCR-RFLP. The data was entered and analyzed using SPSS professional statistics package (Version 13). Results. A486V polymorphism was significantly associated with increased risk of myocardial infraction (P=0.027) and A486V carriers (homozygote) had 0.125 fold risk to develop myocardial infarction when compared to control group (CI=0.15-1.060). However, after analyzing the R65L and A142V variants we found no association of these polymorphisms with the risk of developing myocardial infarction. Conclusion. The presence of A486V polymorphism in GRK4 gene was significantly associated with the risk of myocardial infarction among hypertensive subjects.
