Last week we said that most of the long liquidation had been done. We thought copper’s strong fundamentals were protecting it from another major downleg in prices, which would be driven by shorting. However, the tide turned late last week. The realisation that a debt crisis was unfolding in Hungary, together with weak US employment data and the erosion of technical support on copper’s charts, was enough to tip the fragile balance.
