Optimising the distribution centre (DC) and DC planning have taken on a new dimension in Australia as the country embarks upon a carbon trading scheme. Traditional principles of DC optimisation do not necessarily hold true when carbon has a price. Globalisation and more regulation from governments have changed the game. Businesses are under pressure from a number of directions. They need to be green(er), there is a slowing of the economy so the pressure for efficiencies is higher, and they are facing more competition. Many manufacturers have focused on specialisation, quality, lean manufacturing, and other strategies to ensure competitive advantage. Honing these practices has helped many thrive despite the macro-economic forces that work against them.
