Metallurgical industry currently generates significant quantities of metallurgical slag waste having a significant environmental impact. Dumping waste in slag heaps leads to environmental pollution by removing areas of land out of circuit and implicitly deteriorating soil quality in these areas; by polluting surface water and groundwater. Reducing the impact of the waste metallurgical dross can be achieved through reduction of waste at source and their exploitation, which can bring benefit both in terms of environmental protection, in terms of community and agricultural and technical points of view. The paper presents aspects of metallurgical slag heaps impact on the environment and the management of these industrial wastes in order to ensure environmental protection and harmonious and sustainable economic development.
