The No. 3 blast furnace of company-hia Siderurgica Nacional (CSN) was successfully blown-in on August 7,2001 after a 99-day shutdown for a major rebuild. The first iron was tapped two days later. When fully operational the daily capacity will increase from 8000 t/day to 9400t/day.The rebuild was carried out as a turnkey contract by a consortium led by VAI Industries (UK) Ltd., the UK based subsidiary of Voest-Alpine Industrieanlagenbau (VAI), in partnership with Setal, a Brazilian engineering company. At its peak over 3500 people were involved on the site.
