Voest-Alpine Stahl signs acceptance for slag detection

Voest-Alpine Stahl Linz has recently commissioned "Iris" (InfraRed Identification System), a new slag identification system, on two further converters. This system optically detects the different emission behaviour of steel and slag in the infrared. The system ensures a significantly higher availability than usual electromagnetic coil systems as it works non-contact and therefore more reliably and faster generates the signal to close the tapping hole or tilt up the converter or electric arc furnace. The same measuring unit is also used during slag dumping to detect any steel before it is carried over and ensures that it is kept in the converter.
