Construction of a new vertical caster at Dillinger Huttenwerke

Dillinger Huttenwerke has ordered a new slab caster. In addition to the required diversity of formats,ranging from 1400 mm× 230 mm to 2200 mm × 400 mm, there was also the necessity ofconceptually integrating product quality requirements in terms of internal cracking, cleanness andcenter segregation. The optimum concept to meet these requirements consists of a vertical two-strand machine incorporating bending after complete solidification. Internal cracking is avoidedbecause the strand shell is not deformed by bending and straightening processes while the center isstill in liquid state. Accumulation of inclusions on the top side of the strand does not occur.Macroscopic segregation is minimized by intensive cooling and soft reduction. A new type ofsegment with a hydraulically positionable loose side allows to adjust soft reduction parameters duringcasting under load (dynamic soft reduction).
