Durgapur Steel is one of the premier integrated steel plants of India's foremost Indian steel producer, Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL). The plant is located in the eastern part of the country in the state of West Bengal. The plant mainly produces long steel products, structural steel, railway wheels and axles etc. For the supply of its four blast furnaces the plant is equipped with four coke oven batteries. Coke ovens are a prime energy consumer in any steel industry and the productivity of the blast furnace depends much on the quality of coke produced by the coke ovens. The strong present worldwide demand for metallurgical coal has further enhanced the necessity of efficient of coke oven battery operation. Optimum heating control is a crucial factor, as it limits the entire coal carbonization process in a coke oven battery. Optimum heating control, ensuring complete combustion, minimizing sensible heat carried away by the waste gas and reducing heating times, plays a decisive role in lowering energy input and improving coke quality.
