The EFSOP~R technology is a proprietary process that uses real-time and continuous off-gas analysis, along with process monitoring to optimize the operation of the electric arc furnace (EAF). The key components are: a patented water-cooled probe, a custom-designed continuous gas analyzer system, a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) computer. Through an extensive design process, the patented probe has been developed to survive the harsh EAF environment, reaching a lifespan of over one year for the majority of our current installations. Typically, the probe is mounted through an access port in the water-cooled elbow section of the EAF as shown in figure 1. Positioning of the probe ensures that the off-gas sample is drawn from the centre of the combustion cone allowing accurate analysis of the furnace off-gas without the effect of air entering the combustion gap. The extended life and low maintenance features of the probe are due to the unique water-cooled system, sample filtering with an internal high temperature filter that removes dust from the sample stream and an automated high pressure purging system.
