The integrated steelmaker Cockerill-Sambre has commissioned a new EAF at its Charleroi steelworks. The new furnace will give the plant higher flexibility regarding its raw material supply. The 1401/110 MVA furnace supplied by Paul Wurth S.A. is erected in an extension to the existing OBM meltshop. The installation consists of several innovative technologies, including a shaft with scrap retaining fingers, which improves the preheating efficiency, particularly when hot metal is charged: DC power supply with thyristor system including a newly developed free-wheeling diode, for minimizing reactive power and flicker; automatic hot metal charging during arc operation (a Paul Wurth development); extensive pollution control equipment, including a doghouse which remains closed while the scrap is being charged through the shaft.
