The consumer is placing increasing demands on aluminium foundries to improve and deal with metal cleanliness concerns from an overall process perspective. This paper details standard work practice for dealing with molten metal cleanliness, enabling foundrymen to maintain an edge on their competitors. Significant controls must be in place within the foundry when studying all the process areas, particularly charge control, melting process and procedure, metal treatments and additives, fluxing, degassing, molten metal holding, transfer and pouring of aluminium alloys, filtration and mould filling to guarantee total metal cleanliness of the final cast shape.
