Originally built in 1957 and named for the only member of the Rockville Volunteer Fire department to die in the line of duty, the Elwood Smith Community Center, Rockville, MD, was in dire need of renovation. It was no longer large enough to handle its growing activities. The building didn't meet current building codes and was not ADA compliant. Accessibility was improved by putting the entire facility on one level, redesigning the bathrooms and adding a ramp for emergency exit. A new meeting room of approximately 900 sq. ft. can accommodate up to 150 people. The computer room was nearly doubled in size. Storage space was added and the kitchen was updated. To improve energy efficiency, a new HVAC system was installed. New windows and lighting systems were designed to save on energy consumption. The original uninsulated block walls, as well as the new block walls, feature R-20 foam insulation.
