Jubilee of an innovation: 25 years of ABS for commercial vehicles: the use of the anti-lock braking system marks the start of modern safety technology

The location: an icy landing strip in the Arctic Circle. The time: late January, 1981. The developers of what was then Daimler-Benz AG are demonstrating the first production-ready anti lock braking systern for commercial vehicles. And the demonstration is impressive: the anti-lock braking system enables evasive manoeuvres during emergency braking. Trucks, buses and coaches remain steer able when braking on non-uniform road surfaces beneath the left and right wheels. Trailers and semi trailers, too, can be controlled much better in critical situations thanks to the stability of the tractor unit.
