A method has been proposed for using a blooming mill to roll semifinished products from big-end-down ingots of rimming and semikilled steels. In particular, the method can be used for alternatively charging ingots into the mill by the front end and the back end. Each ingot is rolled in several passes each on its face and on its edge. The initial pass made with the ingot face flat is done in such a way that the large base of the conical ingot is reduced first. The largest possible reductions are made in this case. The reductions are made as small as possible when the ingot is turned so that its small base enters the stand first. This is done so as to stably transfer rolled metal to the other side of the mill. The method involves an initial heating, a first-stage extrusion of the distilled calcium to obtain semifinished products, a second heating, and a second-stage extrusion in the continuous regime. The successively fed semifinished products are welded together during the second extrusion operation. The outside surface of the distilled calcium is conditioned before the first heating, which entails heating the calcium to a temperature no higher than 0.12 of its melting point. In the second heating, the material is heated to a temperature no greater than 0.18 of its melting point. The first extrusion is done with an extrusion ratio of at least six, and during this operation the calcium is kept at a temperature no higher than 0.18 of its melting point. The second extrusion is done with an extrusion ratio of 130-200. Temperature in this operation is kept at a level no greater than 0.25 of the melting point of calcium. Both extrusions are done through a one-channel die, and the conditioning of the surface is performed with a metal brush. The method improves the mechanical characteristics of the sections of the wire that are welded in the deformation zone, increases the number of gages of wire that can be made by allowing the production of wire thinner than 10 mm, and increases the productivity of the manufacturing operation.
