The latest generation of refractories (lightweight ceramic-fiber products) is finding increasingly wide use in furnace construction, and abroad these materials have almost completely replaced the traditional brick lining. Fibrous refractories have the following advantages: low thermal conductivity (5-6 times lower than traditional refractories) and good heat-insulating ability; their low density (as low as 150 kg/m~3) and the fact that they can be made in the form of coils, slabs, and mats make them easy to install; the low heat capacity of the fibrous materials makes it possible to speed up the heating and shutdown of the fur naces (in a 2-3-h cycle); the wide range of refractoriness of the products (700-1400 deg C) allows their differentiated use, with the specific application depending on the temperature regime of the furnace or different sections of it. Sheet-rolling shop No. 1 at the Orsk-Khalilovo Metallurgical Combine (OKhMK) has used fibrous refractories to line the flues of its roller-hearth heat treatment furnaces. Those furnaces were rebuilt after their long period of service (more than 33 year) necessitated emergency repairs.
