An experimental study has been made of the effect of the shape of the narrow face of a slab on the deformation of its edge region during hot rolling in a roughing train. It was established that the amount by which the metal in the crack-prone edge region moves toward the middle of the rolled product is minimal when the slab's narrow face is concave. The results of the study were used to propose an experimental pass system for the vertical rolls of the first stand in the roughing train. The new system changes the mechanism by which the narrow faces of slabs undergo lateral reduction and it reduces the deformation of the edge region. Testing of the experimental pass system revealed a change in the topography of rolled-in-crack-type defects and a decrease in the distance between the defects and the edge of the cold-rolled product.
