This article examines certain variants of new steelmaking methods that are more efficient than the methods which have traditionally been used and that consume less energy and charge. The requirements for the design of an efficient, modern fuel-oxygen melting furnace are described and information is given on the new multi-functional fuel-oxygen melting furnace MAGMA, which can be used to make a semifinished product for the production of steel from scrap or metallized pellets. It is shown that a substantial savings in primary energy resources is realized along with an increase in the output of usable metal by using heat from the combustion of a fuel-oxygen mixture instead of electric power to melt the scrap and metallized raw material.
