THE SCIENTIFIC-PEDAGOGICAL CENTER FOR SELF-SUSTAINING HIGH-TEMPERATURE SYNTHESIS - ITS TENTH YEAR

The annual meeting of the Science Council of the Russian Ministty of Science was held at the Palace of Culture at the Moscow State Institute of Steel and Alloys (MISiS) on November 26, 1999. The meeting had the theme "Theojy and Practice of Processes in SelfSustaining High-Temperature Synthesis (SHS)" and was devoted to the tenth anniversaty' of the Scientific-Pedagogical Center for SHS, under the joint authority' of MISiS and the Institute of Structural Macrokinetics USMAN) of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The meeting involved the participation of approximately seventy people - leading scientists at MlSiS and ISMAN and representatives of the Ministry' of Science, the Russian Ministry' of Education, the federal planning agency hitegratsiya, the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences (RAEN), and other organizations. The session was opened by' A. G. Merzhanov - Chair of the Science Council, Director of ISMAN, and Academician of the Russian Academy of Science (RAN) and the RAEN. Merzhanov was followed by Prof Yu. S. Karabasov, Rector of MISiS. The annual report was presented by Prof E. A. Levashov, Director of the Scientific-Pedagogical Center for SHS, Dr. ofEngineering Sciences, and Corresponding Member of the RAEN.Representatives of the Ministry' of Science, Ministry' of Education, ISMAN, Samara State Technical University, and the MISiS offered welcoming remarks which highly praised the work of the Scientific-Pedagogical Center jar SHS. Academician V Zh. Arens - Vice-President and Chair of the Mining-Metallurgical Section of the RAEN - and Academician Yu. F. Shevakin - Director of the Metallurgical Division of the RAEN - acted on behalf of the Presidium of the RAEN and av'arded the Tatishchev Badge of Honor for "Service to the Homeland" to Yu. S. Karabasov, RAEN Academician V A. Romenets - Director of the Department of Economics and Management at MISiS - A. G. Merzhanov, and E. A. Levashov.
