摘要

Description This is the fourth volume in the biennial series of Advances in Medical Physics. The book follows the general outline of past volumes and covers some aspects of basic imaging modalities as well as covering a topic relating to Radiation Oncology, new imaging modalities, radiation safety, and public, professional, and regulatory issues. The format is similar to previous volumes with chapters written by leaders in the various fields of endeavor. Purpose One particular issue relating to the field of medical imaging is that it is difficult for textbooks to keep current. Popular texts do a good job of teaching the basics and presenting technology in more detail; however, a book like Advances in Medical Physics serves to bridge the informational gap and provide a volume that provides a snapshot of the gains in knowledge and technical advances in a timely manner. It is reminiscent of the yearly updates of encyclopedias of past years that were so beneficial before the age of the Internet. The book also serves the purpose of providing timely information on advances in fields of medical physics that an individual physicist might not be involved with. It also gives relevant technical information on topics of interest to the nonphysicists who are involved with medical imaging. Audience The book is written to cover a number of basic needs as indicated above, but at a level that will have wide appeal.Graduate students in Medical Physics should find the book interesting and providing a glimpse at the breadth, complexity, and intrigue of the medical imaging field. Much of the book relates to diagnostic imaging; however, since imaging now plays a greater role in radiation oncology, individuals practicing in that field will gain pertinent information. The level is appropriate for radiology residents who are interested in grasping concepts of new technology. Medical physicists with established careers and interests in other subspecialties will also gain useful information.
