摘要

Context and setting Despite the logical benefits to be derived from the cultivation of safety-mindedness in medical education, the optimal route and timing of such training remain unclear. Why the idea was necessary In a 2008 review of studies addressing the assessment and certification of clinical procedural skills, a persistent deficit identified in competency checklists was the lack of explicit emphasis on safety and infection control. To date, needlestick injuries amongst doctors, for example, boast their highest rates in trainees. What was done We designed a 1-day, hands-on course in basic practical procedures for medical students about to embark on their foray into clinical medicine. Underlying each goal and learning objective was not procedural competency, but the safety of the student and patient. In a morning session, faculty staff covered safety issues pertaining to the operating room and basic practical procedures commonly encountered on wards.
